DSA Performs at City Line Stage during Wildflower Festival May 20-22.

Allow your ‘inner songwriter’ to blossom while riffing with the Dallas Songwriter Association this weekend at the 2022 Wildflower Arts & Music Festival in Richardson

RICHARDSON – You might be a songwriter if you scribble song lyrics on toilet paper and napkins, hum new melodies into your phone’s memo app and consider almost everything that happens to you as fodder for your next hit.

Trouble is, you’ll never know unless you act on the songwriting muse and layer words and music together, breathing life into those fleeting creative impulses.  There’s a gold-record opportunity this weekend as dozens of the 100 active members of the Dallas Songwriters Association (DSA) will be manning information booths and performing their original songs on one of five stages Friday through Sunday at the Wildflower Arts & Music Fesitval in Richardson.

This is your chance to sample home-grown original music, visit the DSA booth to get encouragement and information and convince yourself to take the next step: Join. Create. Collaborate. Perform. Critique. Repeat.

About two dozen DSA performers will play their songs on the City Line Stage. Among them is Barbe McMillen  (1 p.m. Saturday), who is a music therapist with a sweet voice who serves as  Associate Professor of Songwriting and Music Business at Collin College.  Later (9:30 p.m.), Stephen Troum closes out the evening with his tunes, three of which earned him the title of 2021 DSA Songwriter of the Year. Troum, a medical doctor who specializes in hand surgery by day, spends his free time directing his digits to compose cool, contemporary rock songs.

So, would-be songwriters, that’s the challenge. Check out the Wildflower this weekend, listen to some heartfelt tunes, hang around these prolific songwriters and something is bound to rub off. Join the DSA and start participating in classes, open-mic sessions, Zoom and live critiques and tap that inner songwriter persona that wants to shine.
